Maiar AI Framework Set to Challenge ElizaOS

A new AI agentic framework has emerged to challenge Eliza OS, the current leader in decentralized in the space: Maiar.

Maiar is a new competitor focusing on modular composability with plugins. While Eliza has dominated developer attention with a rigid, multi-agent workflow system, Maiar is introducing a novel plug-in-based architecture that aims to attract more developers and mindshare.

What is Maiar?

The Maiar $MAIAR whitepaper characterizes the project as an AI agent framework that emphasizes composability and plugin-based architecture inspired by Unix pipes. It abstracts AI agent functionalities into modular plugins, allowing developers to create adaptable, flexible AI systems without being locked into rigid workflows.

This approach differs from Eliza’s traditional method, where developers follow a structured workflow.

Maiar has seen some adoption within its first ten days, with a growing number of plugins already available and nearly 50 stars on GitHub.

Eliza’s Dominance and Recent Move into Plugins

ElizaOS $ai16z has established itself as the dominant AI agentic framework, boasting over 11,500 GitHub stars and 3,200 forks within three months—reportedly one of the fastest-growing repositories in GitHub history. Its strength lies in its ability to deploy multiple AI agents rapidly, making it a favorite among decentralized AI enthusiasts.

However, Eliza recently introduced plugin functionality, a move that directly challenges Maiar’s unique value proposition. This shift means Eliza now offers faster build times, improved flexibility, and better modular integration—key features that Meer was banking on to differentiate itself.

Maiar’s Lead Developer Shares Thoughts

Maiar’s lead developer argues that their composability advantage allows developers to build intelligent agents that dynamically modify plugin behavior, avoiding the need for constant pull requests (PRs). This provides a more flexible and developer-friendly approach than Eliza’s predefined workflows.

The Future of AI Agentic Frameworks

With Eliza integrating plugins, Maiar faces a challenge in maintaining its competitive edge.

However, its open approach to AI agent construction still offers an attractive alternative for developers looking for maximum customization and autonomy. Whether Meer can carve out its niche or if Eliza will continue to dominate remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the race for the future of agentic AI frameworks is just getting started.

Saakuru has also launched a new agentic framework which focuses on no-code capabilities to deploy as the maximum number of agents as possible. CEO Jack Vinijtrongjit told Swept that this might work best in customer service or in gaming.
